Ryder Cup History

Despite not being comfortable with his game all week, the 31-year old from Portrush showed just why he is arguably the gutsiest golfer on the planet as he withstood incredible pressure coming down the stretch when it became clear that Europe’s Ryder Cup hopes rested on his shoulders. Three up with seven holes to play, he lost the 12th to a par and the 15th to Mahan’s sole birdie of the day before producing the goods with an incredible birdie from 18 feet at the 16th.

Rickie Fowler birdied the last four holes to come back from three down to halve his match with fellow rookie Edoardo Molinari and force McDowell to win his match to win back the Ryder Cup. And he did it in incredible style with a brilliant six iron to 18 feet at the 16th setting up a birdie that left Mahan needing to win the last two holes to give the USA a 14-14 tie that would have been good enough to see them retain the trophy.

His left to right putt tracked perfectly, falling into the hole on the last roll to crush Mahan’s will.

“That was absolutely amazing. That was bananas,” McDowell said. “The putt on the 16th was stuff I have dreamed about all my life.

“The US Open felt like a back nine with my dad at Royal Portrush compared to this. I was really nervous - there was so much pressure.

“The putt on 16 was massive, and these spectators are massive. I had to get the putt going on 16, and it was the biggest one I have hit in my life.”

Mahan was crushed by the defeat and barely capable of speech at the US team’s media conference.

“I’ve played with Graeme before. I don’t even know what day it was. But he didn’t miss a shot. I think it was alternate shot, and he played he played great today. Didn’t miss a shot. Hit a bunch of key putts, probably the last four or five holes, and you know, he … that birdie on 16, after I got it to one down, was huge. He played …. he just beat me today.”

Padraig Harrington, who lost 3 and 2 to Zach Johnson, could have found himself in McDowell’s position as he played at No 11. But he was delighted to finish on a winning team for the fourth time in six appearances.

“Every Ryder Cup’s the same,” Harrington said. “It’s phenomenal. There’s nothing like it in golf. That’s incredible.”

Montgomerie paid tribute to McDowell, saying: “Graeme McDowell was put there for a very good reason. He’s full of confidence and that showed. That birdie on 16 was quite unbelievable.

“I’m very proud. It’s a very proud moment for us all here in Europe. They all played to a man magnificently, they all gave 110 per cent and that’s all you can ask.”

McDowell added his name to the list of Irish Ryder Cup immortals at Celtic Manor.

1987 Muirfield Village, Ohio - Eamonn Darcy
1989 The Belfry - Christy O’Connor Jnr
1995 Oak Hill, New York - Philip Walton

Ryder Cup History

GRAEME MCDOWELL BECAME THE fifth Irish player to clinch the winning Ryder Cup point for Europe with a sensational 3 and 1 victory over Hunter Mahan in the final singles match.

The Ulsterman provoked a mass invasion of the 17th green he described as “bananas” as the American crumbled under the pressure in the decisive game of a classic Ryder Cup.

Two down and needing to win the last two holes to help the USA retain the trophy, the Bridgestone Invitational winner came up 20 yards short of the green with his tee shot, fluffed his chip in front of him and then failed to convert a 30 footer for par after McDowell had putted up to five feet from the fringe right of the green. But like Christy O’Connor Jnr and Philip Walton, he didn’t have to hole out for victory as Mahan conceded defeat.

Despite not being comfortable with his game all week, the 31-year old from Portrush showed just why he is arguably the gutsiest golfer on the planet as he withstood incredible pressure coming down the stretch when it became clear that Europe’s Ryder Cup hopes rested on his shoulders. Gleneagles set for Junior Ryder Cup 09/09/10

The finest young golfers from Europe and the United States are relishing contesting the Junior Ryder Cup later this month at one of the world’s great golfing destinations.

The Gleneagles Hotel, on the wish list of courses to play of many a golf fan around the globe, recently hosted the hugely successful Johnnie Walker Championship, won by Edoardo Molinari and after which Colin Montgomerie made the eagerly anticipated announcement of his European Ryder Cup Team.

It was the latest in a long line of top class tournaments held at Gleneagles, and the most recent example of EventScotland’s investment in golf. As well as The Open Championship at St Andrews, where Louis Oosthuizen clinched his first Major with a magnificent victory, EventScotland has in recent years given financial support to the Scottish Hydro Challenge on the European Challenge Tour, the Senior Open Championship presented by Mastercard, the Cleveland Golf / Srixon Scottish Seniors Open and the Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open.

Paul Bush OBE, Chief Operating Officer for EventScotland, said: “We have all enjoyed a busy and exciting golf calendar this year with some of the world’s best events taking place on our shores. Golf is a huge driving force in Scotland’s economy and the next few years are extremely exciting as we continue to support a host of events in the run up to Scotland hosting The Ryder Cup in 2014.”

Next up is the Junior Ryder Cup, which is very similar to The Ryder Cup in that it is a contest between Europe and the United States, except it is for boys and girls under 16 and under 18 and takes place over two days rather than three. It gives young golfers a taste of the sport’s greatest team competition and provides a chance to showcase the fine young talent in Europe and the United States.

Patrick Elsmie, Managing Director, The Gleneagles Hotel, said: "The Gleneagles Hotel is proud and pleased to host the Junior Ryder Cup on September 27 and 28 on The PGA Centenary Course.

“Gleneagles has a long and proud tradition of hosting world class golf tournaments with golfers from around the globe. The Junior Ryder Cup makes a fitting addition to this roll of honour, when it will be our pleasure to welcome the cream of junior golf from Europe and the United States.”

Day one of the Junior Ryder Cup (September 27) will be foursomes followed by mixed fourballs. Day two (September 28) will be singles matches. The two teams will afterwards travel to The Celtic Manor Resort to watch The 2010 Ryder Cup and to play in a ‘Friendship Match’ on Thursday September 30.

Europe announces Junior Ryder Cup team

The European Team for the Junior Ryder Cup in September was announced after an exciting conclusion to the European Young Masters at Royal Balaton Golf and Yacht Club in Hungary.

The winner and runner-up from the girls’ and the boys’ competition earned their places in the team, and two more were wild card selections by captain Gary Stangl.
The six under-18 players – three girls and three boys – were also announced, having been chosen on the basis of their results in amateur events throughout the year.

Sweden’s Isabella Deilert booked her place in the Junior Ryder Cup, which takes place at The Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland from September 27 – 28, after holding off Manon Mollé of France for the European Young Masters title. Mollé also made the team, along with Leona Maguire, the 15 year old who played in the International European Ladies Amateur Championship in the Czech Republic over the weekend and was Stangl’s wild card pick.

In the boys’ competition at Royal Balaton Golf and Yacht Club, Finland’s Albert Eckhardt and Kristoffer Ventura of Norway finished first and second respectively, while the wild card pick went to another Finn, Juhana Kukkonen, who was third.

In the under -18 category, England’s Kelly Tidy, Manon Gidali of France and Klara Spilkova of the Czech Republic were the girls selected, and for the boys, Belgian Thomas Detry, Germany’s Moritz Lampert and England’s Chris Lloyd were chosen.

Adrian Otaegui is a non-travelling reserve.

Stangl said: “This year our team should be quite well balanced. Having the British Ladies Amateur Champion, Kelly Tidy, in the team gives us a lot of power on the ladies’ side.

“The under 18 boys did well in the championships this year and Moritz Lampert and Chris Lloyd both have the experience of playing in the 2008 Junior Ryder Cup. Our under 16s have also shown a great skill playing in hard conditions on the final day at the European Young Masters.

“The result in 2008 (the USA won 22-2) was very hard to take with and we will try everything to recover this year and use the home advantage at Gleneagles.”

The Junior Ryder Cup celebrates the progress and hard work taking place at the grass roots level of golf, which helps talented young players develop into national team amateurs and some even to The Ryder Cup itself. The collaboration between PGA professionals and junior organisers at club level and PGAs and governing bodies at a national level help these youngsters develop into Junior Ryder Cup players.

It has been the platform from which successful professional careers have been launched for several players. Spaniard Sergio Garcia played in the 1995 exhibition match and four years later was part of the full European Team at The Country Club in Brookline, while Suzann Pettersen played in the Junior Ryder Cup in 1997 and 1999 before becoming Norway’s top female golfer and taking part in five Solheim Cups.

Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy was in the victorious 2004 team and has become one of the most exciting young golfers of recent times, while for the Americans Hunter Mahan, having been in the 1999 junior team, has progressed to become a US PGA Tour winner and was one of Captain Paul
Azinger’s picks for the 2008 contest at Valhalla Golf Club.

Other notable past Junior Ryder Cup players are Matteo Manassero, who played in 2008 and has since become one of golf’s hottest properties, and Alexis Thompson, who finished tied second in the Evian Masters on the Ladies European Tour last weekend.

The United States will announce their team on August 6.

The European Junior Ryder Cup Team:

Isabella Deilert, Sweden

USA retain Junior Ryder Cup

The United States retained the Junior Ryder Cup after beating Europe 13½-10½ at Gleneagles, Scotland despite the hosts winning the third and final session 7½-4½.

Leading 9-3 from the first day, when the USA won the morning foursomes 5-1 and the afternoon mixed fourballs 4-2, the visitors clinched the contest with successes in the singles for Jordan Spieth over Albert Eckhardt (3&1), Doris Chen over Klara Spilkova at the 18th and Justin Thomas over Moritz Lampert (4&2).

Chris Lloyd, out first for the Europeans, won 2&1 against Anthony Paolucci and in the second match Wales’ Amy Boulden earned a half against Emma Talley to give the hosts some hope of a revival, but ultimately the disappointing first day left them with too much ground to make up.

Kelly Tidy notched another point for Europe with victory over Kristen Park, and Juhana Kukkonen triumphed 2&1 over Oliver Schniederjans as the Europeans avoided a repeat of the landslide 22-2 defeat two years ago at Olde Stone in Kentucky.

Europe racked up more points through Manon Mollé’s 5&4 demolition of Alison Lee, Manon Gidali’s victory over Ginger Howard (2&1) and Thomas Detry’s win against Denny McCarthy, while Kristoffer Ventura of Norway added a half after finishing all square with Jim Liu and Sweden’s Isabella Deilert came back from four down at one stage to halve with Cassy Isagawa at the last.

The result means the USA have levelled the series in the competition, which officially started in 1997. America won that match before Europe edged the following three, and the 2006 contest was halved at The Celtic Manor Resort.

European captain Gary Stangl said: “After the disappointment of yesterday the players did brilliantly today to get themselves back in it. They were fantastic and it was a much better today. It was very close in the end.”

Stangl’s honorary vice-captain, Tommy Horton, a former Ryder Cup player and record winner on the European Senior Tour, said: “It has been a pleasure to spend the week with these young people and I think all of them can have successful careers. It has been a revelation to me, this competition and to see these young people play. The future of golf is in good hands.”

USA captain M G Orender said: “It’s been a great competition and congratulations to Europe for making it a lot tighter than I would’ve liked. My team have been fabulous and they are not only champions on the golf course, they are champions in life.”

Lloyd, who last week qualified for European Tour Second Qualifying Stage, said: “It was nice to get the win today and I knew, being out first, I had to do that to have any chance of us getting back in it.”

On Wednesday both teams will travel to The Celtic Manor Resort to meet The 2010 Ryder Cup Teams and to play in the Friendship Bowl on Thursday. The Friendship Bowl will be played over nine holes of The Twenty Ten Course and the players from each continent will be mixed up into six fourballs.

ryder cup 2010

it was close but no cigar for Padraig Harrington in his bid for another Irish Open success with the three-time major winner coming up two shots short at the Killarney Golf and Fishing Club.

A win would have taken Harrington into the automatic qualifying places for this year's Ryder Cup but it is winner Ross Fisher - backed at a high of 46.0 - who takes that honour.

In what is turning out to be a stellar year for European golf there are likely to be a handful of star names who will miss out on the action at Celtic Manor in October.

Wherever Harrington finishes in the qualifying places he is likely to make captain Colin Montgomerie's team for the bi-annual skirmish against the Americans.

But who could say the same about Sergio Garcia? The Spaniard is hopelessly out of form and is the most high-profile big name likely to miss out.

junior ryder cup

The Junior Ryder Cup is a team golf competition between Europe and the United States. It is based along similar lines to the Ryder Cup Matches and is run by the same organizations - he PGA of America and Ryder Cup Ltd (a subsidiary of The PGA European Tour). Each team consists of six boys and six girls. The Americans must be under the age of 16 on the final day’s play, while the Europeans must be no older than sixteen on the 1st of January of the year of the event. The tournament is played over two days of four-ball matches. There are three boys' matches and three girls' matches on the first day and six mixed matches on the second day.

The venue for the 2010 Junior Ryder Cup tournament is Gleneagles Resort in Perthshire, Scotland. The Match will be played on 23rd September 2010. This event will be followed by a Friendship Match at the Celtic Manor Resort, in Wales.

Junior Ryder Cup - Tournament Format

Day One will features foursomes matches, followed by mixed fourballs matches, while Day Two will feature Singles matches. This change in format was made prior to the 2008 Junior Ryder Cup, creating twice as many points to play for, making the competition more similar to the Ryder Cup Matches tournament itself.

History of The Junior Ryder Cup

In 1995, an informal match between European junior golfers and Central New York PGA Section and area juniors was played in the United States; Europe dominated but no results were published. Semi-official matches were played in the next two Ryder Cup years, with Europe now taking on the whole of the United States. The Americans won 7-5 in 1997 and Europe won 10½ to 1½ in 1999.

The Junior Ryder Cup was formally introduced in 2002 and the first event was played at the K Club in Ireland, venue for the 2006 Ryder Cup. The contest was won by Europe by 9½ to 2½. The second event was held in 2004 at Westfield Group Country Club in Ohio, USA and the European Team retained the title by winning 8½ to 3½. The 2006 event in Wales was tied 6-6. The United States Junior Ryder Cup Team came out strong on the second day of competition and cruised to victory at the 2008 Junior Ryder Cup, 22 to 2, at The Club at Olde Stone in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Several players in the competition have gone on to launch successful professional golf careers. Most notable among them is Sergio García, who played for the 1995 European team. Isabelle Lendl (former tennis star Ivan Lendl's daughter) played for the United States in 2006.

introduction

The Ryder Cup Matches is like no other event in golf. It was established in 1927 as a competition between two teams of golfers representing the best professionals in the United States of America and Great Britain. Over the decades, it has evolved into one of the most popular and widely-covered events in the sporting calendar, with the US now competing against a team representing Europe for the trophy named after the event's founding father, Samuel Ryder.

The Ryder Cup Matches tournament is staged every two years, with each side taking turns to host the event on home soil.

The Celtic Manor Resort in Wales is the 25th venue to stage The Ryder Cup, the first time the competition has visited Wales. The event has broken new ground in golf many times before. In fact, this is a characteristic feature of The Ryder Cup. Most of golf's greatest events started out as localised competitions which would become genuinely international events many years after their foundation. The Ryder Cup, however, was established with grand ambition a trans-Atlantic contest decades before passage across that great ocean was commonplace.

The origin of The Ryder Cup Matches is the subject of much debate among golf historians. Plans to establish a regular competition between the United States and Great Britain had been carefully drawn up on a number of occasions, but it took one man to make it happen.

Samuel Ryder was more than just an enthusiastic member of the gallery at an exhibition match at Wentworth between the US and Britain in 1926. The event had been arranged during free time for players between qualifying rounds of The Open Championship and the tournament itself. Ryder was a wealthy businessman, famous for having made his fortune from selling Penny Packets of seeds. He had taken to golf in his 50s and had a vested interest in the contest, as he had employed one of the British representatives, Abe Mitchell, to be his personal teaching pro.

Following the match, Ryder famously told British player, George Duncan, that he would support a regular competition between the two nations by rewarding the winning players with £5 each and hosting a party with champagne and chicken sandwiches. He then commissioned Mappin & Webb to create a solid gold trophy for £250. But Ryder's patronage did not end there. He helped to finance the British team's journey to the US for the inaugural Ryder Cup Matches in 1927 at the Worcester Country Club in Massachusetts. The match was won convincingly by the Unites States team captained by Walter Hagen by 91/2 points to 21/2. Ted Ray captained the Great Britain team after original captain Abe Mitchell was sidelined with appendicitis.

In becoming one of the very few events that genuinely transcends its sport, the Ryder Cup has had to overcome many obstacles and challenges along the way. Exhibition matches featuring Ryder Cup players were held during the World War II, although there was a 10-year gap between Ryder Cup victories for the United States in 1937 at Southport & Ainsdale and Portland Golf Club in 1947.

Great Britain joined forces with Ireland in 1973 at the Muirfield Links in Scotland and the process of golfing expansion continued with the United States facing a European team for the first time in 1979 at The Greenbrier in West Virginia, in an attempt to revive an increasingly one-sided contest. Of Jack Nicklaus' many achievements in golf, his determination in pressing for the creation of a European team is one of the least recognised.

As it turned out, the United States won their 13th Ryder Cup in a row at The Greenbrier and would win a further two before the tide turned in 1985 at The Belfry. Europe's captain Tony Jacklin wrenched The Ryder Cup from American hands for the first time in 28 years and heralded an age where it has become a compelling contest. Since 1985, Europe has won competition seven times (retaining The Ryder Cup in 1989 after a tie), while the USA has won four times. The 2001 Ryder Cup at The Belfry was postponed until 2002 following the terrorist attacks on the US of 9/11.

Colleagues for Corey……

As I’m sure you are aware, my opposite number Corey Pavin recently announced the four men who will be his assistant captains in Wales: Tom Lehman, Davis Love III, Jeff Sluman and Paul Goydos.

I have been around the game long enough to understand why the media wanted me to comment on each and every one; ‘Why did Corey pick so and so?’ ‘What will so and so bring to the American team room?’ ‘Why did he pick so and so who hasn’t played in a Ryder Cup’ etc, etc – you get the drift.

However I said then, and I’ll reiterate here, I’m not going to do that out of respect for Corey and his team – who he has in his backroom staff is his business, not mine.

All I will say is that, as good friends of Corey’s, all four were natural choices because you want people around you that you are comfortable in the company of. I wish them all well.

Patience is a virtue…….
Of course, that leads me neatly into the subject of my own assistant captains, a topic I am continually quizzed on whenever a microphone is placed in front of my face and The Ryder Cup questions begin.

Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity here in my own blog to make it crystal clear, exactly what my position is.

First and foremost, I do not feel there is any rush at all to name my assistants. I have said publicly that I am hoping to select a younger generation of assistant captain and, because of that, I am going to leave the decision for a few months yet as the range of players I have in mind will all be trying to qualify for the team first and foremost. Therefore, I will be making NO decision on that, or naming ANY names, until at least after the conclusion of the Open Championship at St Andrews in July. At that time, there will be just over a month to go until the end of the official qualifying period and I feel that is a more realistic time to take stock of the overall qualification situation to see where we all stand. So let’s all have a little patience on this issue – I’ll name the names when the time is right.

An Eight-some Reel…..
Those of you who know me will know the number eight has played a central role in my professional golfing career. Not only does it represent the number of Harry Vardon Trophies I won as European Number One, it is also the number of Ryder Cups I have contested as a player.

Now, as we sit here in the middle of February, there are also eight months to go until The Ryder Cup kicks off at Celtic Manor and I wanted to use that countdown to look back over my eight Ryder Cup appearances, all of which were memorable and all of which I could write volumes about.

Therefore, to kick off the series, I am going to start with the year of my debut, 1991, at Kiawah Island.

1991: The Year I Made My ‘Mark’
As everyone knows, The 1991 Ryder Cup boiled down to Bernhard Langer’s putt against Hale Irwin. But the reason he had that opportunity was because of what happened prior to their game with the players out on the course beforehand. Of course, one of those matches was my own against Mark Calcavecchia.

Understandably, on the verge of making my Ryder Cup singles debut, I was a little nervous and I’ll never forget, before I went out, our captain Bernard Gallacher saying to me; ‘Colin, the one thing you don’t want to do against Mark Calcavecchia is let him get ahead. He’s a gritty player and a great front runner so, whatever you do, try to stay with him.’ Of course, I immediately forgot all that and was five down by the turn!

What was going through my mind? In all honesty, when I lost the eighth and ninth to go five down, I was thinking that if I lost the next three holes, I would lose 8 and 7 to equal the heaviest defeat that anyone had ever had in Ryder Cup singles – I really wanted to avoid that so I knew then that I had to do something about it!

However I was lucky in a way that the walk from the ninth green to the tenth tee at Kiawah Island was about half a mile so, during that time, I managed to get my head together and I managed to birdie the tenth and 11th to get back to three down which was pretty good. Unfortunately though, I made a mess of the 14th to hand Mark that hole which saw me four down with four to play.

It is then written in history what happened, but it’s fair to say that into a left to right wind over those closing holes, Mark struggled and I managed to win all four of the holes to square the match in the end. I must admit it really helped me feel part of the team having won half a point for Europe while at the same time taking a half point from the Americans – all of which helped Bernhard have the opportunity to come within inches of holing the putt that would have seen us retain the trophy.

Thinking back on it, I was playing those holes down the stretch, not for me, but for the half point gained for Europe. That is exactly what I will be saying to my Team at Celtic Manor. On that Sunday, wherever you play, that point counts incredibly towards the end of the day to give the opportunity to the guys coming behind you to win The Ryder Cup. No-one must ever forget that.

A Gee Up from GMac….

I was interested to hear an interview with Graeme McDowell recently and in particular, two things he said. Firstly, when asked what his main goal for the year was, his reply was “to make Monty’s team for Wales.” I have to admit, I hear that a lot from players in interviews and, from a Captain’s perspective, it’s music to my ears. Every player wants to be part of this European ‘family’ I am trying to create and which will come to fruition at Celtic Manor. From the players to the caddies to all the staff at the Tour, everyone wants to be part of this European Ryder Cup experience. They all believe it will be a successful experience and I believe that too.

Secondly I heard GMac say that, from his current position of World Number 46, in the past, that would have made him a certainty for a European Ryder Cup Team but not any more – and he’s right. I remember, in the past, going down much further than that in teams I played in, but now with European players occupying half the world’s top 20, it just goes to show the huge wealth of exciting talent I now have at my disposal.

Flying High……
Ever since I was appointed Captain, I have overseen many developments off the course relating to The Ryder Cup and I was delighted to be part of yet another special occasion in Dubai a couple of weeks ago when Emirates Airlines were announced as the Official Airline of The 2010 Ryder Cup as well as Official Partner to The European Team in 2012.

Emirates Airlines have supported our Tour since the Desert Classic tournament began in Dubai in the late 1980s and the standards involved in the airline have always been first class. As one of the great Blue Chip companies of the world, I think it is a fabulous association we now have with them in an official Ryder Cup sense and one that can only be beneficial to us.

Personally speaking, of course, Dubai will always have a special place in my heart in terms of The Ryder Cup because it was there over a year ago now that my announcement as Captain was made official.

Take it to the Bridge……
Another off-course development was unveiled recently when the new bridge over the River Usk – which will help transport players and spectators to and from the new practice ground at Celtic Manor – was officially opened.

The £2 million twin-suspension bridge completes a £16 million investment by Sir Terry Matthews and The Celtic Manor Resort in building a new course clubhouse and internal infrastructure, all geared to making this Ryder Cup the best ever.

Right from the word go, Sir Terry and his staff got one hundred percent behind everything to do with The Ryder Cup and I think the opening of the bridge – in the company of the new First Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones, and our own Ryder Cup Director Richard Hills – showed that once again.

They built an entirely new practice ground and when it became apparent that the existing transport layout wasn’t quite right to get players from the practice ground to the course and the clubhouse, they immediately said, “Well, let’s get two million together and build a bridge!” In these difficult economic times we have a lot to thank Sir Terry, Celtic Manor and the Welsh Assembly for in terms of their continued backing and support. We now must have the most expensive walkway from the practice ground to the first tee ever assembled on any golf course in the world and we all look forward to making big strides over it come October.

A Match for Anyone…..

With the Gulf Swing now behind us, it is time to look forward to the next part of the season and one which contains the first two World Golf Championship events of the year; the WGC – Accenture Match Play in Arizona and the WGC – CA Championship in Florida.

It is great as both events will see European players contend at the very top level of the game but, for obvious reasons, I am intrigued to see how the match play unfolds.

We had a finalist last year in Paul Casey while Ross Fisher made the semi-finals and Rory McIlroy the quarters, so let’s hope this year we can again have a good representation into the latter stages. This is a great opportunity for all European players to show me, in a match play format, just exactly what they can do and I will be watching every shot hit. I’ll be looking out for the results of all of the European players but also, and perhaps even more importantly, how they achieve those results.

I want to see guys who show guts and determination, guys who are maybe two or three down with four or five holes to play but who battle back to win. It doesn’t matter if that’s in the first round or the final, trust me, I’ll be taking note of it. Don’t get me wrong, the 8 and 7, 7 and 6 wins are great and show a player is playing well, but it is the matches which are tight and where a player comes out the other side that are crucial, and the ones which could be key in shaping my Team.

The Captain's Blog: Seventh Heaven

European Ryder Cup Captain Colin Montgomerie gives us his seventh blog in which he looks back at the Gulf Swing and ahead to the Match Play; plus begins a special series of his own reminiscences from his eight Ryder Cup appearances.

Swing-ing Success…..
Welcome to my latest blog and I hope the start of 2010 has been a successful one for you. I must admit, in terms of The Ryder Cup, it has been fantastic.

We have just finished our traditional Gulf Swing on The European Tour and, to be honest, I don’t think it could have gone any better. We had three European winners in Martin Kaymer, Robert Karlsson and Miguel Angel Jiménez, in addition to three largely European chasing packs challenging near the top of the leaderboards on the Sundays.

I was particularly delighted for the three champions. For Martin and Robert, it was great to see them back in the winners’ circle after spells out in 2009 with injury. Martin had shown a bit of form towards the end of last season with a couple of top tens but I know Robert was a little worried, not having been near a top 30 since he came back from his eye problem. Therefore, it was not surprising he was more pleased than anything in Qatar with the fact he once again played at the level which saw him win The Harry Vardon Trophy in 2008. To shoot 65 in the final round at Doha Golf Club, which I think everyone appreciates is the most demanding of the three courses we play in the Gulf, was some feat. And what can I say about Miguel? Some players just seem energised in a Ryder Cup year and he is definitely one of them. I already have an espresso coffee maker on standby for the team room at Celtic Manor because I have a feeling I might just need it!

Well done to all……
It was not all about the winners in these three weeks though. As I said, there was strong European representation at the top of each of the final standings. The current number one in The Ryder Cup rankings – Lee Westwood – was in fine form in Dubai and Qatar, Rory McIlroy was in contention once again as was Ian Poulter – and how great was it to see Martin, Rory and Ian battle it out together in the final day three ball in Abu Dhabi? Also prominent were players such as Edoardo Molinari, Henrik Stenson, Ross Fisher, Oliver Wilson, Søren Hansen and Sergio Garcia. Finally, let’s not forget Paul Casey – another player who, thankfully, looks to have put his injury woes of 2009 behind him. Paul finished 11th in Dubai and fifth in Qatar, the latter being excellent as he’d never made the cut there in the past. Funnily enough, his new caddie – Christian Donald – told him before the week that he’d never missed a cut in his life in Qatar and didn’t intend to start now – that’s motivation I suppose! Great too to see Christian’s brother, Luke, finish second behind Steve Stricker at Riviera on the US PGA Tour. See, it is not just in Europe that I’m watching!

Bravo Alvaro……
My final reflection on the Gulf Swing centres around one player – Alvaro Quiros. He didn’t win but he was a common denominator on the leaderboards of all three tournaments. He is someone I want to see mature into a Ryder Cup player and I have to say that every time I see him play, he is doing just that. I’m delighted with his progress and his form in the Gulf is exactly the sort of consistency I’m looking for. Because of having to go ‘in the envelope’ at last season’s Vivendi Trophy after the injury to Anthony Wall, he was bitterly disappointed not to be able to play in the singles because I know he wanted to show me his potential in that realm and he wasn’t allowed to do that. However, trust me, he is someone that everybody should watch.

ryder cup begin

When Samuel Ryder that bears his name in 1927, it’s unlikely that he would have predicted the emergence of WAGs, Park & Ride, blogs, airport-style security and triple-decker corporate boxes. But it’s certain he would have welcomed the heavyweight battle that starts the 36th tournament tomorrow at 8am.

Colin Montgomerie’s performances in recent Ryder Cups have been so impressive that his impact on the US team will be no less than Tiger’s influence on the Europeans. There may be golfers in better form on the European side but Montgomerie was the logical choice to lead his team’s defence of the old trophy. He has partnered local favourite Padraig Harrington successfully in the past and that pairing are guaranteed a raucous and passionate support on every tee, fairway and green. But despite all of that, the in-form Tiger and his successful President’s Cup partner Jim Furyk will take a lot of beating and Tom Lehman will be really confident of landing the first blow.

The other heavyweight contest is in the fourth match where the tried and trusted combination of Clarke & Westwood take on another President’s Cup success story in Mickelson & DiMarco. The Americans should be favourites on the basis of recent form but local experience and a long-standing relationship between Clarke & Westwood will ensure they bring the match all the way to the closing holes.

Europe’s most likely success should be with the Spanish partnership of Garcia & Olazabal in the third match against David Toms and debutant Brett Wetterich. Many Americans are confident that Wetterich’s long hitting could be a huge advantage in the soggy conditions but he will have to perform in an environment way beyond anything he will have experienced before.

Two rookies face each other in the second match where in-form Paul Casey will partner Robert Karlsson against JJ Henry and Lehman’s wild card Stewart Cink. If Casey can reproduce the form which saw him win last week, then he should win enough holes to post a point for the Europeans.

In recent history, European dominance of the fourballs & foursomes has underpinned their overall success but on this occasion the home team will have to be at their very best to take an early advantage over this US team with their two ‘awesome’ pairings.

close contest

Remarkably, after two hours of golf, none of the four matches has yet gone more than 1-up in any direction. This keeps the possibility of a sweep for either team still alive although the early evidence suggests the Europeans are the likely winners of this day and the tournament.

Tiger Woods has had something of a nightmare so far but has just hit a sweet approach to the 8th and can get his match back to all square. The US team cannot afford to have both their heavyweight teams fail to win.

The golf has been nothing short of spectacular so far and not always for the right reasons! We’ve seen many balls go in the water and there’s been quite a lot of hacking out from behind trees. All of this is wonderfully entertaining for the spectators.

The pace of the golf has been quite slow. The top game is on the 8th green, two hours and fifteen minutes after the first shot. Apparently, they have been warned but it’s not clear how they can be sanctioned. Not that the fans are complaining, this is golf heaven.

As things stand at 10.15am: top and bottom games are tied, Europe are 1-up in each of the middle games. You can easily buy & sell Ryder Cup Tickets through YourTicketMarket.com.This is one of the most relaiable side for buying and selling of online tickets.People wait for the ryder cup thorugh out the year.People of all ages like this cup very much. This is one of the best side and reliable side for buying and selling of other event tickets like cricket, basketball, rydercup, tennis and many sports.threatre tickets are also available on this side.moreover this side also provide concert tickets and deliver to you in time.

Fourballs on the back nine

All four matches are now on in the inward nine and all of a sudden, it looks like it could be a much better morning for the US team. The inability of Monty and Harrington to make any kind of putt has allowed Furyk & Woods to take a 3-hole lead after 13. It must be hugely frustrating to Ian Woosnam, and indeed all European supporters, that despite Tiger being completely out of sorts, the Europeans have not been able to land any significant blow.

It looked for a while that the two middle matches were going to be easy wins for Europe with Garcia, Olazabal, Casey & Karlsson all playing superbly. But the US pairings have fought back with recent hole wins and both those games are still in the mix; Casey & Karlsson 1-up after 12, Garcia & Olazabal 1-up after 10.

In the final match, Mickelson looks like he’s warming to the task but Westwood has just made a key birdie on the 10th to go 1-up.

Ryder Cup Singles Draw

Ryder Cup Programme

All the strategising is complete and the two captains have laid out their team line-ups for the final day. Monty leads the charge for the Europeans as he has done so impressively and successfully in the past. Europe need just four and a half points to win. Based on the evidence of the first two days, anything less than a final total of 16 points would be a surprise.

First match tees-off at 11.15am.

Toms v Montgomerie
Cink v Garcia
Furyk v Casey
Woods v Karlsson
Campbell v Donald
Henry v McGinley
Johnson v Clarke
Taylor v Stenson

Ryder Cup Viewer Numbers

The television viewer numbers for the 2006 Ryder Cup are now available for the US, UK and Irish markets. The Sunday Times reports that the total number for these 3 major markets was just over 6 million viewers (the peak numbers were 4.6M in the US, 1.1M in the UK and 600 in Ireland). The US numbers are down 20-30% on previously figures, which may in part be related to the timezone differences.
The 1 Billion viewers that the Irish government promised the Irish taxpayer when trying to justify the taxpayers money being pumped into the event was clearly a little white lie! While the total worldwide figures are not yet in it’s obvious that the low US and UK numbers mean the event will not have had even a credible fraction of the promised exposure. Touting the event as the 3rd most important sporting event was also a bit of a stretch (the 2004 Ryder cup did not make the top 15 most-watched world sporting events in a global survey) – lets wait and see how this one fairs…

U.S. Ryder Cup captain Pavin sails rough seas

team given his record? On the other hand, how can he add him given Woods' form?

"Well, he's the No. 1 player in the world," Pavin said Monday at a news conference in Milwaukee. "Obviously, I'm considering him highly, no doubt about it. He's playing better. I think we have all seen that. And he wants to play, he wants to be a part of the team.

"But it's going to be my judgment whether I pick him or not."

Pavin will name his four at-large picks Sept. 7. The eight players who secured automatic spots on the team after the PGA Championship were Phil Mickelson, Hunter Mahan, Bubba Watson, Furyk, Steve Stricker, Dustin Johnson, Jeff Overton and Matt Kuchar.

Four of them (Watson, Johnson, Overton and Kuchar) will be Ryder Cup rookies. Two of them (Overton and Kuchar) have not won a tournament this year.

Over the next three weeks, Pavin will settle on his captain's picks for the biennial matches Oct. 1-3 in Wales. Woods is a no-brainer. Though Montgomerie should have minded his own business, he was right: There is no way Pavin can leave Woods off the team.

Anthony Kim, who finished ninth in the points, would be a lock if not for the fact he has played in only two tournaments since undergoing thumb surgery in May and missed the cut at the PGA.

Lucas Glover finished 10th in the points. But he has done next to nothing since winning the 2009 U.S. Open.

Others Pavin probably will consider are Bo Van Pelt, Stewart Cink, Ben Crane, Ricky Barnes, Nick Watney, Sean O'Hair, J.B. Holmes and Rickie Fowler, all of whom finished in the top 20 in the points. It's not exactly a murderer's row, but it's the hand Pavin's been dealt. You can easily buy & sell Ryder Cup Tickets through YourTicketMarket.com.This is one of the most relaiable side for buying and selling of online tickets.People wait for the ryder cup thorugh out the year.People of all ages like this cup very much. This is one of the best side and reliable side for buying and selling of other event tickets like cricket, basketball, rydercup, tennis and many sports.threatre tickets are also available on this side.moreover this side also provide concert tickets and deliver to you in time.

ryder cup.

The 38th Ryder Cup is more than a month away and already U.S. captain Corey Pavin has had a dust-up with a reporter and went 1-down in the pre-Cup gamesmanship battle with European counterpart Colin Montgomerie.

Then there's the Tiger Woods question. Woods could have made it a lot easier on Pavin by making the U.S. team on points. But he didn't, putting Captain Corey in a tough spot.

Davis Love III, one of Pavin's assistant captains, had a front-row seat to the theatrics last week at the 92nd PGA Championship.

"I would like to be captain one day but after the last few days of watching Corey, I don't know," Love joked. "Maybe not. (Jim) Furyk and I were laughing about it a little bit. Maybe we don't want to be captain."

Pavin had a heated exchange with Jim Gray of the Golf Channel, who reported that Pavin told him Woods would be a captain's pick. After Pavin said Gray misquoted him, Gray confronted the captain, called him a liar and was heard to say, "You're going down."

In a joint news conference with the two Ryder Cup captains, Montgomerie was given an opening and took advantage of it. Pavin refused to say whether he would pick Woods, so a reporter asked Montgomerie what he would do if he were in Pavin's shoes.

"That's a very difficult, dangerous and undiplomatic question," Monty said, smiling broadly. "But of course I'd pick him, yes."

"Let me make a note of that," Pavin said. "Thanks for the help. Appreciate it. He's very helpful that way, Colin is."

Montgomerie went on to add that Woods was the best player in the world and the best player of his generation. Of course, he didn't mention that Woods has played poorly this year and that every European wants a shot at him.

Love, a veteran of six Ryder Cups as a player, has seen all this before.

"I think it's just the Ryder Cup these days," he said. "It's become a soap opera until you actually play. Then while you're playing it's kind of not, and then afterwards it's a soap opera again.

"It's so big. It's like Tiger. It's so big you've got to talk about it."

European Vice Captains for Ryder Cup 2010

Darren Clarke , Thomas Bjorn and Paul McGinley have been named by Europe Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie as his vice captains. He was quite bullish during the announcement saying they had the qualities to help the team regain the Ryder Cup from the United States.

“They have all been part of successful European Ryder Cup teams in the past and know the players who will be part of the team. We all have huge respect from the players and respect in the team room and on the course is vital.”

“I think this is the strongest team we have ever assembled, on and off the course. It’s a fabulous time for European golf.”

Montgomerie still has to finalize his 12-man team, which will be chosen after August’s Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles one of the questions this selection raises is whether Darren can still play himself onto the team – having shown some great form recently…

U.S. captain Corey Pavin has selected four vice captains: Tom Lehman , Jeff Sluman , Davis Love and Paul Goydos .
